Roatan is the only Bay Island with its own international airport.  The number of direct international connections are ever increasing. There is a significant change in the number of flights seasonally. November to April tends to be the busiest time with the most flight choices.

I nearly always find the cheapest flight by doing a search on google flights. Often the midweek flights are cheaper than weekends if you are flying at a time of year that has midweek flights.

Flights From the US

A great guy to contact for airport pickup!

Flights direct to Roatan are often a little bit more expensive than connecting through San Pedro Sula on the mainland. I think it is often worth paying the extra. Firstly it is WAY less hassle, secondly if you miss your connection in San Pedro and have to overnight, the cost of transport and a hotel will probably be more than the difference in flight price. Your luggage allowance is often limited when choosing this route.

Things are pretty fluid right now due to the COVID crisis. So I have inserted this section to try to keep the info as up to date as possible.

Direct to Roatan

Miami to Roatan (American Airlines), currently on Saturday and Wednesday until November 2nd 2021 then daily flights are set to resume through August 22nd 2022.

Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) to Roatan (RTB) with American nonstop. Starting 1st November 2021 Weekly on Saturdays. Three weekly flights March 1st 2022 to August 15th 2022 Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday.

Atlanta with Delta weekly on Saturdays.

Houston to Roatan (United). This schedule sees frequent small changes but is consistently between 5 days a week and daily.

Denver to Roatan (United). Saturdays starting December 18th 2021.

Minneapolis (MSP) to Roatan direct (Sun Country Airlines) Weekly on Fridays starting 17th December 2021 ending April 8th 2022

Flights to Honduran Mainland to connect to Roatan using a regional carrier listed further down the page (My preffered regional carrier is CM Airlines)

Miami to San Pedro Sula SAP (American). Two daily, One combination works well to connect to Roatan.

Miami to Tegucigalpa (TGU) The timings of the flights work well for connections but it is usually an expensive option.

Houston to San Pedro Sula (SAP)

United Airlines - 3 Daily. One or two of them will work well to connect to Roatan.

Spirit Airlines on Tues Thurs Fri Sun (Timings of this flight are not ideal to connect with Roatan flights, but may be possible)

Houston to Tegucigalpa (TGU) The timings of the flights work well for connections but it is usually an expensive option.

Los Angeles LAX to San Pedro (A new route with United) Start 17th December 3 times weekly, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. It is currently only scheduled up to March 26 2021. The timing of the flight into SAP is great to then connect to Roatan. However the return flight to LAX from SAP takes off at 7am. This makes it impssible to do without overnighting in San Pedro on the return flight. You are better to connect through El Savador (SAL) (Delta, United or Avianca) than choosing this option. More on connections through El Salvador (SAL) further down the page.

Atlanta to San Pedro Sula SAP (Delta). Daily. This flight works well for connections to Roatan.

New York City (EWR - United) to San Pedro Sula (SAP) - Daily The timing of this flight is not good, you will arrive at 10.15pm and need to overnight in San Pedro before flying to Roatan the next day. The return flight is 11.10pm meaning you will be waiting around in San Pedro for this flight for quite a while after your flight arrives in San Pedro from Roatan. If you are flying from the New York area you are better off flying through San Salvador with Avianca from JFK to SAL and SAL to RTB. Its a very short connection but San Salvador airport is small and connections of only 40mins are very doable!

Fort Lauderdale to San Pedro Sula (Spirit) - Be careful with this one. There are daily flights but the arrival and departure times are awful (Midnight and 1am) meaning connections to Roatan involve long and miserable waits in SAP airport. Much better to fly on Monday Wednesday and Friday. Arrives SAP 2.25pm and leaves SAP 3.25pm. So same day connections should be reasonably easy.

New Orleans (MSY) to San Pedro - Spirit 3 Weekly, Tuesday, Thursday Sunday. Starting December 3rd 2020 ending April 8th 2021. The timing of this flight is good to connect from Roatan in both directions. Arrival in SAP at 12.10pm and deparing SAP at 1pm

Orlando (MCO) to San Pedro - Spirit 2 weekly, Monday and Friday starting December 4 2020 and ending April 12th. The timing of this flight is good to connect from Roatan in both directions. Arrival in SAP at 1.20pm and deparing SAP at 2.15pm

From canada

Direct to Roatan

This all seems to be changing frequently right now. Normally flights from Canada are available Mid December to Mid April/May, with Air Transat (Montreal, Quebec and Toronto) and West Jet (Toronto) and Sunwing (Montreal and Toronto)

Air Transat appear to have cancelled ALL flights for the 2021/2022 winter season.

Westjet from Toronto starting December 19th on Saturdays ending April 24th 2022.

Sunwing have flights from both Toronto and Montreal starting December 13th 2021 ending April 11th 2022

Grand Cayman

Normally Cayman Airways has direct flights to Roatan on Thursdays and Saturdays. Roatan to Cayman is on Sundays and Fridays. This seems to be suspended indefinitely.

From Europe

It is usually easiest and cheapest to transit through the USA to Roatan, but COVID restrictions may make this difficult for some. There are plenty of other options though.

Air Europa have flights from Madrid to San Pedro Sula (SAP) on Mondays and Thursdays, this can be an excellent option. The price of flights seems to vary wildly!

Another option is with Westjet through Toronto. This may need to be booked as two seperate flights, Europe to Toronto which is offered by a number of different airlines (but reuires an overnight in Toronto) and then Toronto to Roatan at 9.30am on Fridays. The return to Europe would not require an overnight in Toronto.

Since COVID is currently making transit through the USA difficult. It may be worth looking at flying through Mexico City and San Pedro Sula or Panama City (PTY) and San Pedro Sula if the above does not work.

Over the last 18 months we have found the cheapest flights from London to Roatan can be got for as little at 500 GBP return! You should easily find them for less than 650 unless you are flying at peak times. United and Delta usually come up as the cheapest with a Friday or Saturday departure day from London. Virgin Atlantic have also popped up as good value. The down side is that on way out to Roatan you will need to overnight in the US (don't forget to get an ESTA!). On the way back connections are quick and easy.

other possible international options

There is rumour of a flight from Panama city and San Jose Costa Rica starting soon on Thursdays and Sundays.

Another interesting possible route is through Grand Cayman via La Ceiba with Cayman Airways.
