FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long does a PADI specialty course take in Roatan?

Most diving specialties take one to two days, with two to four training dives depending on the specialty. Enriched Air Nitrox is the shortest at one day; Deep Diver, Wreck Diver and Search and Recovery each take two days with four training dives. Knowledge-only specialties (Coral Reef Conservation, Emergency Oxygen Provider) can be completed in a single day with no required dives.

What prerequisites do I need for PADI specialty courses?

PADI Open Water Diver is the entry-level prerequisite for most specialties. Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Sidemount, Search and Recovery, and Self-Reliant Diver all require PADI Advanced Open Water. Self-Reliant Diver additionally requires 100 logged dives. Emergency Oxygen Provider has no prerequisite — it is open to non-divers.

What is included in the specialty course price?

Each specialty includes tuition with a qualified PADI Specialty Instructor, PADI specialty materials, the PADI certification card fee, all scuba equipment rental for the training dives, and all boat fees for the qualifying dives. Specialty prices range from $150 (Emergency Oxygen Provider, knowledge-only) to $400 for the multi-day advanced specialties.

What is PADI Master Scuba Diver and how do specialties contribute?

Master Scuba Diver is PADI's top non-professional recreational rating. To qualify you need PADI Rescue Diver certification, five PADI specialty certifications, and fifty logged dives. Combining specialties in Roatan is the most efficient way to tick those boxes.

Why do PADI Instructors need specialty instructor ratings?

PADI Instructors need five specialty instructor ratings (plus 25 certified students) to qualify as Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT). Our IDC packages include the MSDT prep course where instructor candidates earn those five specialty instructor ratings — typically in the specialties most commercially valuable in the Caribbean.

Are there non-diving specialty courses I can take?

Yes. Emergency Oxygen Provider is a knowledge-and-practical course with no diving prerequisite — open to non-divers travelling with diving friends or family. Coral Reef Conservation is a knowledge-only specialty for certified divers covering reef science and dive impact. Both can be completed in a single day.

Can I do a specialty not on your headline list?

Yes. PADI's full specialty catalogue runs deeper than the fifteen we list as core. Distinctive specialties like Cavern Diver, Project AWARE, Dive Against Debris and Equipment Specialist can be arranged on request, subject to instructor availability. Get in touch with the specific specialty in mind and we will quote it.

Are Enriched Air Nitrox and Deep specialties valuable for instructor work?

Enriched Air Nitrox is the most commercially valuable specialty an instructor can hold — nearly every recreational dive shop wants Nitrox instructors. Deep specialty instructor is also widely used because of how often students want to extend their depth limit. Both feature in our MSDT prep selections.
