Need a cheap flight to Roatan or Utila. Roatan usually has direct flights from Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Montreal, Toronto and more.
A detailed description of all the ways to get to Roatan
Last updated: 1 May 2026 by Will Welbourn (Go Pro Caribbean)
This is the full guide to flying to Roatan (RTB) and San Pedro Sula (SAP) — the two airports that handle almost all international arrivals to the Bay Islands of Honduras. Schedules below are current as of May 2026 and cover every direct flight to Roatan plus the main connecting routes via the Honduran mainland.
Direct Flights from the USA to Roatan (RTB)
Six US cities have direct service to Roatan. Miami, Atlanta and Houston run year-round; Dallas, Denver and Minneapolis are largely seasonal. Schedules are heavily weighted toward Saturdays.
Direct Flights from Canada to Roatan
Outside the winter window, Canadians typically connect through a US gateway — most commonly Toronto/Montreal → Houston → Roatan on United, or via Atlanta on Delta.
Direct Regional Flights to Roatan
Two regional carriers fly direct to Roatan from Central America — useful if you're already in the region or want to combine Roatan with another country.
Connecting Through San Pedro Sula (SAP)
If your home city has no direct flight to Roatan, the cheapest and most reliable workaround is to fly to San Pedro Sula on the Honduran mainland and take a short regional flight to Roatan. SAP is served by far more international airlines than RTB.

Flights from Europe to Honduras
Direct Europe to Honduras
Via the USA (most common & usually cheapest)
Major European hubs all offer one-stop routings to Roatan via a US gateway:
- United: London, Frankfurt, Munich, Geneva, Rome, Paris and others → Houston (IAH) → Roatan
- American Airlines: Multiple European cities → Miami or Dallas → Roatan
- Delta & partners: Major European cities → Atlanta → Roatan
Connecting via Tegucigalpa
Tegucigalpa now has two airports: Palmerola International (XPL) at Comayagua, about 90 km from the city, which handles all current commercial international flights; and Toncontín (TGU), the older city airport, which still handles some domestic routes including onward flights to Roatan with regional carriers.
Ferries to Roatan & Utila
Two ferry operators connect the Bay Islands to the mainland and to each other: Galaxy Wave on the La Ceiba ↔ Roatan run, and Utila Dream serving both Utila ↔ Roatan and Utila ↔ La Ceiba.
Galaxy Wave: La Ceiba ↔ Roatan
The Galaxy Wave runs twice daily in each direction. The crossing takes around 75–90 minutes.
- La Ceiba → Roatan: 09:30 (arrives ~10:45–11:00) · 16:30 (arrives ~17:45–18:00)
- Roatan → La Ceiba: 07:00 (arrives ~08:15–08:30) · 14:00 (arrives ~15:15–15:30)
Utila Dream: Roatan ↔ Utila
The Utila Dream now runs a daily inter-island service between Roatan and Utila — replacing the older weekend-only Utila Princess II schedule.
- Utila → Roatan: 10:20 daily (arrives ~11:20)
- Roatan → Utila: 14:00 (arrives ~15:00) — Mon–Fri and Sun
- Roatan → Utila: 14:15 (arrives ~15:15) — Saturdays only
The Roatan ↔ Utila ferry times don't sit comfortably with most incoming and outgoing international flights. Connections to Miami, Atlanta and Houston are tight in both directions — often unworkably tight. The simplest plan is to overnight in Roatan on the night of arrival and again on the night of departure.
If you must travel on the same day, these are the only routings that reliably work:
- Arrive: Miami → Roatan with American Airlines, then ferry to Utila
- Arrive: Houston → Roatan with United, then ferry to Utila
- Depart: Utila ferry to Roatan, then Roatan → Dallas (DFW) with American
- Depart: Utila ferry to Roatan, then Roatan → Atlanta (ATL) with Delta
Any other combination — and especially anything involving the Miami, Atlanta or Houston return flights — should be planned with a Roatan overnight on the connection day.
Utila Dream: Utila ↔ La Ceiba
The Utila Dream also runs a separate mainland service to La Ceiba, twice daily in each direction. Crossing time is around 60 minutes.
- Utila → La Ceiba: 06:20 (arrives ~07:20) · 14:00 (arrives ~15:00)
- La Ceiba → Utila: 09:00 (arrives ~10:00) · 16:30 (arrives ~17:30)
All ferry schedules are subject to weather and seasonal adjustment — always confirm the night before you travel.
Essential Travel Tips
Booking strategy
- Book early for peak season: November to April is the busy window. Saturday flights sell out months in advance.
- Compare on Google Flights: the simplest way to see all carrier options on your dates.
- Cheap fares from the NYC area: currently the cheapest US-to-Roatan fares we've seen come out of the New York area on American Airlines, routed through Miami — round trips around USD $500 are achievable.
- Flying from Denver? Always check connecting fares from Colorado Springs (COS) before booking out of Denver — fares from COS are often significantly cheaper, even though it's a much smaller airport.
- Flying from Europe? London-origin fares to Roatan are often cheaper than fares out of many US cities, even with a US connection. Always price out a London or Madrid origin alongside any US gateway.
- Hidden city / skip-lagging: opportunities are few and far between right now — most US gateways are similarly priced for the onward Roatan leg, so the technique rarely beats simply choosing the cheapest origin.
Direct vs connecting — the trade-off
Direct flights to Roatan tend to be a little more expensive than the cheapest connecting fare via San Pedro Sula. The simplicity is usually worth it: if a missed connection in SAP forces an overnight stay, the hotel and transfer cost typically exceeds the saving on the original ticket.
Baggage allowances on regional flights
If you're connecting onto a Sosa or CM Airlines flight from San Pedro Sula to Roatan, baggage limits are tight — typically around 35 lbs (16 kg) total, with strict size restrictions on carry-on. Check at booking and pack accordingly.
What to do if you miss your connection
Have a backup plan in place — a confirmed contact for accommodation in San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa, and travel insurance that covers connection delays. Budget hotels near SAP airport are widely available for under USD 60.
Frequently Asked Questions
What airlines fly direct to Roatan?
American Airlines (Miami daily, Dallas seasonal), Delta (Atlanta), United (Houston year-round, Denver seasonal Saturdays), Sun Country (Minneapolis seasonal), Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing (all winter-only from Toronto/Montreal), Tag Airlines (Guatemala City) and Tropic Air (Belize) all fly direct to Roatan (RTB).
Does Roatan have an international airport?
Yes. Roatan's airport is Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport, code RTB. It is the only Bay Island with a fully operational international airport, which is why most travellers heading for Utila or Guanaja still route through Roatan.
What is the airport code for Roatan?
Roatan's IATA airport code is RTB (ICAO: MHRO). The full name is Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport.
How do I get to Roatan from the USA?
The fastest way is a direct flight to Roatan (RTB) from Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Denver or Minneapolis. If your home city has no direct service, the cheapest option is usually to connect via San Pedro Sula (SAP) on the Honduran mainland and take a short regional flight to Roatan with Sosa or CM Airlines.
Are there direct flights to Roatan from Canada?
Yes — but only in winter. Three Canadian carriers operate direct service to Roatan during the winter season: Sunwing (Toronto, Mondays), WestJet (Toronto, Sundays & Mondays) and Air Canada (Montreal Saturdays, Toronto Sundays). The 2025/26 season has now ended; all three carriers are confirmed to resume service from December 2026 through May 2027. Outside winter, Canadians typically connect through a US gateway.
Should I fly direct to Roatan or connect through San Pedro Sula?
Direct flights to Roatan (RTB) are slightly more expensive but far less hassle. Connecting through San Pedro Sula (SAP) opens up many more US, European and Latin American departure cities and is often noticeably cheaper. The risk is that if you miss your mainland connection the overnight hotel and transfer costs usually erase the saving.
Why are flights to Roatan so expensive?
Roatan is a small island served by a limited number of carriers, with most direct routes operated only once or twice a week and demand heavily concentrated on Saturdays. Booking early, flying mid-week where possible, or connecting via San Pedro Sula on Spirit, JetBlue, Volaris or Copa can all reduce the cost significantly.
Do I need a visa to visit Roatan, Honduras?
Most visitors (including US, Canadian and EU passport holders) receive a tourist permit on arrival of up to 90 days. British passport holders are an exception and need a consular visa arranged in advance. Always check your stamp on arrival — Roatan immigration sometimes grants less than 90 days, so have your return ticket ready to show.
Are there flights from Europe to Honduras?
Yes. Air Europa flies Madrid to San Pedro Sula several days a week, and IberoJet flies Madrid and Barcelona to Tegucigalpa (Palmerola, XPL). Most European travellers still find it cheaper to fly via the USA — typically London, Frankfurt, Paris or Madrid into a US hub and then on to Roatan.
How do I get from Roatan airport to West End?
West End and West Bay are about a 20–25 minute drive from Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB). A licensed airport taxi to West End typically runs around USD 25–30 (one way). Go Pro Caribbean and Coconut Tree Divers offer complimentary airport transfers for Divemaster and Instructor candidates booked with us.
Can I connect straight from an international flight to the Utila ferry?
It's tight — often too tight. The Utila Dream ferry leaves Roatan at 14:00 (14:15 on Saturdays), and the times don't sit comfortably with most US arrivals or departures. The simplest plan is to overnight in Roatan on the night of arrival and again on the night of departure.
If you need a same-day routing, the only combinations that reliably work are: arrive on the American Airlines flight from Miami or the United flight from Houston; depart on American Airlines to Dallas (DFW) or Delta to Atlanta (ATL). Same-day connections back to Miami or Houston are usually unworkable.
