⏰ Important Timing Note
To be certified as a PADI instructor, you must have been a certified diver for at least six months. Therefore, I strongly suggest you try to get your Open Water certification as soon as possible. If you come to Honduras at least three months after that, you can go all the way through to the PADI instructor development course in one visit. When you arrive in Honduras, you will only be given a 90-day entry visa, so staying for six months will not work.
⏰ Total Recommended Timeline
- Minimum stay: 10-12 weeks (all certifications through OWSI)
- Recommended for complete preparation: 12-14 weeks
- Recommended for MSDT: 14-18 weeks including mentorship experience
- Important: Must have Open Water certification for 6 months before IDC
📋 Prerequisites & Medical Requirements
- Medical clearance: WRSTC form signed by physician within 12 months
- CPR/First Aid: Current within 24 months (or complete our $135 course)
✈️ Travel Planning Support
Flight Booking Tips
- Plan for extended stay (12-18 weeks depending on chosen path)
- Consider: Flights to San Pedro Sula (SAP) or Tegucigalpa (XPL) and then connecting with a local airline to Roatan (often cheaper)
- Free consultation: I'm happy to help find the best flight deals!
Visa Information
- Honduras visa: 90-day tourist visa granted upon arrival
- Extensions available for longer programs
- Advance visa required: Some passport holders (notably British citizens) must apply for visa before travel
- Recommendation: Check with Honduran consulate if advance visa required for your nationality
🌟 Final Thoughts
Starting from no diving experience, this is an ambitious but incredibly rewarding journey that will transform you from a complete beginner into a professional diving educator. While the path is longer than for those who already hold certifications, it's also more comprehensive and will give you an exceptionally strong foundation.
This is a relatively small investment compared to a college degree, but provides you with a qualification that will almost guarantee employment anywhere in the world where diving takes place. The diving industry offers unique opportunities for travel, adventure, and meaningful work that few other careers can match.
We look forward to welcoming you and supporting your complete journey from beginner to professional diving educator.
All prices are in USD and current as of June 2025. PADI fees are subject to change by PADI headquarters.
